What is Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a proven industry-based learning system that combines on-the-job experience with technical classroom training. Upon completion of the specified training period, apprentices receive a Certificate of Qualification. Apprenticeship can also be described as "Earn while you learn meaning you earn a real wage while learning a skill. This provides a real advantage over attending a tradtional college or university, where tuition rates are much higher, which usually forces an individual to obtain a student loan, and they are not paid for any portion of their training.

What is a Journeyperson?

A journeyperson is an individual who has completed the required on-the-job training and technical classroom training, passed a certification exam and has received a Certificate of Qualification from the Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission. Certification proves that a person is qualified to work in a specific trade. Some employers may offer a wage incentice for those who have achieved journeyperson status, and the potential for new career opportunities may be available.

What is the Red Seal Program?

The Interprovincial Red Seal Program (also known as the Red Seal Program) was established to provide greater mobility across Canada for skilled workers. Through the Red Seal Program, tradespeople are able to obtain a Red Seal endoresement on their Certificate of Qualification by successfully completing an interprovincial examination. With Red Seal Certification an individual may work in any province or territory in Canada. The Red Seal Program is recognized as the interprovincial standard of excellence in the skilled trades.

What do I need to do to become certified in a trade or subtrade?

  1. Finish High School
    The entrance requirements for most trades require Grade 12
  2. Find a trade that suits you
    Talk to your career counselor, parents, apprenticeship office or a Joint Training Committee
  3. Find an employer to hire you
    Treat this like any other job search, keeping in mind 80% of all jobs are never advertised
  4. Register
    Sign the required contracts
  5. Start your career
    After completing the required training and exams you will receive a Certificate of Qualification

What can I expect when I become an apprentice?

  • A combination of on-the-job training and technical classroom training
  • Mentorship from an expert in your trade
  • Certification time of 1 to 5 years (depending on the trade)
  • 80% of learning will be on-the-job and only about 20% (6 to 10 weeks per year) will be technical training in the classrom
