Career Opportunities in the Residential Construction Industry

Women

The residential construction industry can provide women with challenging, sustainable and rewarding careers. It has become more common for women to choose careers in a typically male dominated industry. Women in residential construction have expressed satisfaction with their career choice and enjoy the physical and intellectual aspects, in addition to the good pay and rewards that are offered by this industry.

Youth

Historically it has been thought that the only way to find success and happiness in your career was to follow the path of attending traditional colleges and universities. Studies have found that individuals who interact with others and work with their hands tend to be the happiest at work. The trades are very valuable to society for the goods and services they provide, but also to the individual for the sense of satisfaction they get from a job well done.

Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) is an opportunity for youth across Saskatchewan to get a head start on career planning. Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship is a three level challenge, which can be completed over the duration of grades 10, 11 and 12.

Youth who have completed all three levels and are registering as an apprentice in a designated trade are eligible for:

• Waiver of registration fee
• Waiver of first level of technical training tuition
• 100 hours of trade time credit per SYA level completed

Aboriginal People

Residential construction is a key industry where Aboriginal people can develop specialized skills in fields such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or numerous others and obtain challenging, sustainable and rewarding careers. The continuing shortage of skilled workers means there are increasing opportunities for Aboriginal people in the labour market.
