Estevan & Region

Quick Facts:

  • Population (2011):  11,054
  • Average per capita income: $37,522
  • Unemployment rate (2012): 3.8 percent
  • Vacancy rate: 1.3 percent
  • Average rental rate per month (Fall 2011): $948
  • Average resale home price (2011): $216,000

Also known as The Energy City, Estevan has the strongest economy in Saskatchewan due to its proximity to the Bakken Oil Field, extensive coal mining and a strong agricultural sector. The announcement of the $1.4 billion carbon capture project at the Boundary Dam Power Station will inject more investment capital and generate further labour market demand.

The Estevan region has the lowest unemployment rate in Saskatchewan and the highest participation rate. The strong labour market and business opportunities make Estevan and the region a desirable location for families and businesses to grow the community.

As with any community experiencing growth and optimistic economic prospects, Estevan and region are faced with the necessity of increased urban development planning to address upcoming or current housing and infrastructure issues. Current home building activity is not sufficient to keep pace with rising demand and higher home prices and lower vacancy rates are the result.
