This course is ideal for anyone looking to improve their document use skills. Training starts with introductory blueprints and moves through to advanced drawings, providing an opportunity to study a common, yet detailed workplace document. Along with Essential Skills development, participants also acquired new Technical Skills in terms of blueprint reading that enhance their everyday work in sales and construction or assist with future studies and business establishment.
This course provides an opportunity to refresh and improve trades math skills directly related to residential construction. Content will cover basic measurements, calculations, ratios, and conversions as they relate to residential construction. As well, practical applications of workplace scenarios, problems and situations such as calculations for elevation, angles and distances, rafter line lengths, framing stairs and concrete volume may also be discussed.
This course presents effective safety and job-site communication skills to enhance learning and work productivity for mentors, apprentices and individuals entering careers in residential construction trades. The safety component of the course will provide information on Occupational Health and Safety legislation, hazard assessments and personal protective equipment. Topics surrounding workplace communications include effective communication styles, giving and receiving feedback, conflict resolution and active listening.
Individuals interested in strengthening foundational Essential Skills in reading text, numeracy and document use are encouraged to participate in Essential Skills Online (ESO) training, developed by Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) and made available by Bow Valley College. ESO provides a flexible, interactive method of course delivery in which workplace documents form the basis of the curriculum. The training program is available on an ongoing basis and can be accessed at home by completing online learning activities.
