The City of Yorkton is located in a region with a strong agricultural sector and large potash reserves. Recent investments in these industries have strengthened the economy of Yorkton and other communities in the region, most notably Esterhazy which is located near the Mosaic Potash Mine. Recent investment in two canola crushing plants in Yorkton prompted development and increased business activity in the community.

Labour demand from industry in the region and the indirect businesses that have established in response to investment grew Yorkton's population 17 percent over three years. The mining industry predicts that the next decade will bring further labour shortages and increased demand for skilled workers, which will draw more people into the region.

Population increase and demographic shifts have put pressure on the rental and resale markets in the community and the City has focused on solutions to low vacancy rates and making improvements to existing housing stock. The city provides education and career opportunities to draw in young professionals and students; improvements in housing options for these demographics will give the community further advantages for growth and labour retention.
